New Developments in the Americans with Disabilities Act - Important Implications for Occupational Medicine.
 

 

 

 

 

Tour: The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety is fully dedicated to scientific research on the prevention of work-related injury and associated disability.  The staff includes over 20 scientists specializing in biomechanics, ergonomics, epidemiology, human factors, psychology, health services research and rehabilitation, working in eleven specialized laboratories at the Institute, and in a wide range of field studies. All research results are published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.  Dinner meeting participants will have the opportunity to tour the laboratories, learn about several current studies, and obtain copies of any research articles of interest.

1. Identify the three most important changes in the ADA as a result of the 2008 ADA Amendments Act
2. Describe the new scope of coverage by the ADA with respect to employment discrimination
3. Describe at least 3 strategies to assure that pre-placement examinations do not lead to discriminatory actions under the Act

Speaker: Carolyn S. Langer, MD, JD, MPH. Medical Director, Medical Management and Policy, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care

Dr. Carolyn Langer is Medical Director of Medical Management and Policy at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.  In this role, she provides medical leadership for utilization, medical policy, new technology assessment, quality and other related functions.  She previously worked in medical management roles at Fallon Community Health Plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA, and the Tufts Health Care Institute.  She also served as VP and Chief Medical Officer at ManagedComp, a managed care workers' compensation company.  Dr. Langer is an Instructor at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), where she teaches a graduate course on Occupational Health Law, Policy and Administration and sits on the HSPH Occupational Medicine Residency Advisory Committee.  Dr. Langer is also an Adjunct Instructor in Public Health and Family Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine.  She has lectured extensively and written a book chapter on the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Dr. Langer received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed her residency at the Harvard School of Public Health. She is board certified in occupational medicine. Dr. Langer holds a law degree and a Masters in Public Health from HarvardUniversity. She is also a retired Colonel and former flight surgeon in the Army National Guard.

From Mass Turnpike - take Route 495 south (exit 11A) to "West Main Street, Hopkinton" (exit 21A).  Proceed east onto Route 135 and through Hopkinton center.  Continue 1.5 miles to Frankland Road on left.  Travel 0.7 miles to Liberty Mutual. Park in front lot.

From Boston, via  MASS. TURNPIKE  (Approx. drive time: 40 min.) Take Rte. 90 West to Exit 11A (Rte. 495 South).  Take 495 South to Exit 21A  (W. Main St., Hopkinton).  Go East on W. Main Street, which becomes Rte. 135.  Proceed on 135 through the lights at Hopkinton Center (Collela’s grocery store) About a mile and a half past Hopkinton Center, bear left onto Frankland Road (the turn is a t the crest of a small hill:  a small sign indicates where you enter for Frankland Rd & you will see Weston Nurseries land on your left ).  On Frankland Rd, follow signs to Research Institute.  The entrance will be on your left after a long, stone wall.  Park in front lot.

From Worcester, via Rte 290  (Approx drive time: 35 min.)  Take I-290 East to Exit 26A (Rte. 495 South).  Follow directions from 495 South (above).  Park in front lot.

From Natick/Framingham via Rte. 9. Follow Route 9 West to Route 126 South to Route 135 West to Ashland.  Continue past small shopping center (Papa Gino's, CVS, BayBank) and proceed through traffic light and past Mobil station to Frankland Road on right.  Travel 1 mile to Liberty Mutual on right.  (go straight through stop sign. LM will be on your immediate right). Park in front lot.

From Natick/Framingham via Rte. 135.  Approx drive time: 12 min. Take Rt. 135 West out of Framingham. Follow through Ashland, past Dairy Queen, Honeydew Donuts, and then a Mobil Station.  Shortly after the Mobil station you will see AshlandState Park & SeniorCenter on your left.  On the right side of the street is a small white sign pointing to the Research Institute.  Take that right onto Frankland Road.  After the intersection (stop sign) at Cross Street, the Research Institute will be the first right. Park in front lot. 

From Providence, RI via Rte. 95.  Approx drive time:  48 min. Take Rte. 95 North to Exit 6B (Rte 495 North) toward Worcester.  Follow directions from 495 (same for both North & South). Park in front lot .

From Hartford, CT via Route 90.    Approx drive time:  90 min.Take Rte. 90 East to Exit 11A  (Rte. 495 South).  Follow directions from Rte 495 South. Park in front lot .

Credit:
This program meets the criteria of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine for 1.5 risk management CME. The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
