Description: A medical director and healthcare educator will discuss automatic external defibrillator (AED) programs in the
workplace. Topics include the development and implementation of AED programs including medical direction, policy and procedure development, liability issues, initial unit placement vs. program
expansion, and recent changes in the American Heart Association’s cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) standards.
Learning Objectives:
1. review the role of the automatic external defibrillator in cardiac arrest management 2. articulate the relationship between the rapid medical response and probability of patient survival 3.
identify key components of policy and procedure development for an automatic external defibrillator program.

Peter Rugg MD FACEP As a Medical Director, Dr. Rugg oversees occupational and clinical education programs for industrial and emergency medical services organizations. Dr. Rugg’s experience includes
a seven-year stint with New England Life Flight and more than 20 years as an emergency physician. He is a Fellow of the American Board of Emergency Medicine, an assistant professor of Emergency
Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and an Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor. He is the past Chief of Emergency Medicine at UMASS- HealthAlliance and serves on the
Medical Advisory Board of USANA Health Sciences, Inc. He is board-certified in Emergency and Internal Medicine.
Cyndi Childs NREMTP I/C Ms. Childs focuses on maximizing operational
efficiency and clinical education. She is the author of Learning ECG’s for Life and The EMTB Distance Refresher Course. In addition to her background operations management, Ms. Childs has over a
decade of experience as a nationally registered paramedic. She is an Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor, a Massachusetts Department of Public Health Instructor/ Coordinator, and a member of
the American College of Healthcare Executives.
