Description: This session covered common areas of legal risk in the occupational health setting. By reviewing different types
of risk and appropriate preventive measures, the occupational health practitioner was better able to both prevent legal risk and to investigate and manage incidents when they occur. Dr. Patterson
has chaired the Risk Management Committee of Occupational Health + Rehabilitation for five years and has developed many policies and investigated many allegations. This session will cover such basic
areas as credentialing, sexual impropriety, malpractice, and fitness for duty/return to work examinations. Specific cases will discussed, and there will be the opportunity to present additional cases
during the session.
Learning Objectives:
1. will be able to reduce risk in their practices by implementing effective policies and procedures. 2. will work cooperatively with managers and lawyers to address incidents in their practices
3. will lead the establishment of a cooperative climate in the workplace aimed at reducing risk.
Featured Speaker: William Patterson MD MPH
is board certified in Internal Medicine and Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He has been practicing, teaching, and consulting in occupational medicine in Massachusetts for over 20
years. Currently, he is the Chief Medical Officer of Occupational Health + Rehabilitation Inc, a national network of occupational health services. In November, 2005, Dr. Patterson will
begin serving as assistant vice president, Northeast, Concentra Health Services. Dr. Patterson serves as Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Public Health and has a teaching
appointment at the Harvard School of Public Health. He has been a consultant to many state and federal agencies, including OSHA, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Massachusetts Department of
Public Health. He is a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and former president of NECOEM.
